Breathing deeply, she slowly unfolded the crisp paper. Natalie, I find it hard to express everything I feel, or want to say to you, even when I try and write them down on paper. But I have to try. Yesterday, well, was one of the most difficult day’s I have ever had to face after what happened between us. I truly am sorry for putting you into the position you are in, it wasn’t right of me to act as I did. But what I have felt for you over the last two days has been more than I have felt about anyone the whole of my life. Maybe I tried to show you in the wrong way? Maybe I tried to rush you? Maybe I’m fooling myself that you feel in anyway similar to me? I don’t know. But what I know is that what I feel is true, that when I’m with you, I feel alive, and when your gone I feel lost, in more than one way it seems. To feel this way about you after only knowing you for a few short days if as much a mystery to me as it probably is to you, but it is there all the same. I wish I knew what your thinking, dreaming about, as you lye asleep over there. What was running through your mind when we kissed, and why you’re the way you are now because of it. I know that if you want to tell me, if you need to, then you will, but if you don’t want to then I can understand. I want to be there for you, no matter what, always know that. I cant help but to watch you sleep, you look so peaceful. Gently breathing, you look so calm, how you should be. And I can’t help but think how much I want to be there next to you with you in my arms. But I know now isn’t the right time, so I leave this letter for you. I try to say so much yet I feel I haven’t said enough. I hope we can talk soon. Sweat dreams. Sam. P.s. A special kiss from me, on your bedside table. Nat turned to see a single red rose lying there. Next to where she had slept. (posted by Nick) ======================================================================================================================== (USS Paladin - Deck 24, Quarters of Ensign Conaty - Security Officer, Ensign Natalie Conaty - 0705) Nat stared at the Rose and then back at the letter. She didn't know what to make of it all, it was all so.. confusing. It must have bin one of the most single handidly romantic thing anyone had done for her in her life. Yet she wasn't sure if Sam had meant it to be romantic or was he just simply trying to let her understand? Either way she fell about smiling un-controllably. She jumped out of bed and picked up the Rose, she went to the replicator and replicated a vase to put it in. She put the vase and its contents on the bedside table were Sam had left it and then made her bed. She picked up the letter again and re-read it. She wasn't sure how to approach such a direct letter. No one had ever been this forward with her, she pulled open one of her draws and placed the letter neatly in there. She noticed a pen on the table with the letter. She assumed Sam had left it there afterwards, she picked it up and pocketed. She thought she had an idea on how she would initiate conversation with him. Even so at the thought of it she bit her lip and continued tidying her room up. After tidying her room, into a sparkling perfection she headed off into the bathroom and went into the shower. After a long shower she emerged fresh, she decided to wear her hair down. She looked at the time, 0733 ~Damn~ She put on some civilian clothing, there was no need for her to traverse the hallways at this time in the morning in Starfleet Uniform. Although she placed her COMM. Badge over her clothing and walked out of her quarters. "Computer Locate Ensign Moto" She said authoritivley. [Ensign Sam Moto is in his quarters] ~Figures~ She thought to herself. It was dammed early in the morning. NRPG: Skipping ahead a little RPG: Nat stood outside Sams door for what seemed an eternity. She finally plucked up the courage to ring the door chime. She waited and waited, finally Sam came to the door. As he did she pulled the pen out of her pocket and held it out infront of her with a smile on her face she said, "I believe you left this in my quarters last night, Sam" (posted by Jono) ======================================================================================================================== (USS Paladin - Deck 1, Outsidde Ready Room - CSO/2O Lieutenant (jg) Joran Matthew Brownlee - 07:35) Joran stepped out of the turbolift, one or two PADDs tucked under his arm. He then rang the doorchime. (reply Straton) Joran walked in, and stood at attention. "Captain," he said, "we have come up with a solution on how to scan the anomaly." (reply Straton) "Lt. Matrix," he said, "it was your idea. I believe you are better qualified to explain it." (reply Matrix, room for questions) "I also have an alternative in case the probe fails. We can, with your permission, sir, rig up a few cloaking devices on some of the fighters and use them as a manned probe to scan beyond the anomaly. Do you have any questions?" When he heard the door chime he slowly stuggled to open his tired eyes, his head blank as too who could be calling at … turning to check the time, 7:43 in the morning! Then a little flicker inside him said, ‘it could be Nat!’ and he felt a buzz of excitement and he jumped out of bed. Then he shook his head ~it probably wont be, I just want it to be. Why are you so stupid Sam?!~ Pulling on a pair of trousers he headed to the door, no shirt, no socks, no shoes, just a pair of baggy joggers. He pressed the door lock and it slid open. Looking up he saw her bright blue eyes looking back, twinkling in the corners, and her smile beaming across her face. "I believe you left this in my quarters last night, Sam.” Sam’s smile must have spread form ear to ear and for a moment he was speechless, he was so glad to see her, even if it was only half seven in the morning. Finally he spoke, although he wasn’t really sure how to sart his sentence, she had obviously found his letter, but now what did he say? “it is a good pen isn’t it? Maybe I should have taken it with me.” Trying to make small talk was not Sam’s strong point, “would you like to come in?” (posted by Nick) ======================================================================================================================== (USS Paladin, Marine Use Holodeck - Gunnery Sergeant Rellam Tam - 1200) Rellam had perched himself on a rooftop overlooking the square in front of the government building on Beta Aquari III. This was the second scenario he had run, the first had ended badly in front of the Government Cities major hospital. Rellam had spent five years with the Ambassadorial Guard, a master in counter sniper and counter terrorism techniques, a roof top next to a square was just another place he did his job, like ant tree or underbrush covered forest. Rellam was sure of one thing as he scanned the holographic crowds bellow, looking for the best angles and the places a disturbance was likely the break out His rifle would fire at least one shot before the mission was over. The statue in the center of the square, a likely place for an instigator to stand for reasons both physical and psychological; the windows of the apartment complex across the square, a good view of the square as well as a decent shot at the front doors of the government building. Rellam, looking through the sight of his scope found a dozen places he would need to watch if he was give this assignment, a dozen places he might have to shoot someone if given the order. Every Marine had a job, from the private newly assigned to the squad, to the Commandant of the Corps Herself, and Rellam had no delusions about what his job was. He killed people for a living, and he accepted that fact as a simple part of his life. When faced with this fact people usually tried to tell him one of two things, either that all Marines used violence to accomplish their jobs, or that his job wasn't to kill it was to accomplish the mission, and sometimes that involved killing. Rellam always did his best to look thoughtful, then nod, knowing full well, that they were wrong and his job was to kill people. He knew that the people he killed were bad people, he hoped, or people about to do something bad, but in the end he had to follow orders, and trust that when his superiors said the the man in the square with the gun needed to die, that it was for the greater good. No one would ever quite understand things the way Rellam saw them, but he never once expected them too. "Computer, place a gunman in a tactically significant position, somewhere in this square using the tactical intelligence programing in the Marine database." Rellam said, getting only a chirp of acknowledgement in return. Rellam started scanning the crowd and the buildings, checking the spots he had previously taken note of. He quietly watched the crowd for any odd signs of movement. Slowly as he neared the end of his first sweep, he noticed movement in a window at the end of the square. Bringing his rifle to bear, Rellam watched the motion, zooming in to see a man with a disruptor at the window. Rellam immediately slowed down his breathing, as well as his heartbeat. Taking careful aim he began to squeeze the trigger on the rifle. After nearly three decades of practice he timed it just right, completing the trigger squeeze in between heartbeats. The Phaser beam lanced out and caught the other sniper in the forehead, 'killing' him instantly. Standing up, Rellam picked up his rifle case and placed the phaser back inside. "Computer end program," Rellam said as he walked to the door. Today it had just been another hologram, another training exercise, in the next couple of days, it would be real again. Rellam took no joy in the thought of having to kill someone, he just did his job. Slinging his rifle case over his shoulder, he walked back out into the real world. "We're going to be pretty busy," Steph replied with a small smile. "One squadron will be patrolling the outer system, with another patrolling around the planet and lending air support to the marines and tactical personnel on the ground. The third squadron will be down for a refuel and rest period, but will still need to be ready to launch if needed. Actually, I have the squadron rotation schedule right here, if you'd like to take a look." She held the PADD out for Smith. "Major Menelian and I have already gone over it. The newly designed fusion equipment for powering the reclamation machinery in the recycling plant being set up just northwest of the city was available and with several deft taps of his fingers he routed two of them to the area then sat back with a sigh before nervously tapping his fingers on the desk, that report he was expecting was overdue. Michael sat there and stewed. He had come to a decision earlier in the morning, that he just could go and kill the rest of the crew to save his sister. It wasn't an easy decision, but he had to accept the fact that she was probably already be dead, and even if she was still alive, she probably wouldn't live even if Michael did exactly what they said. He couldn't even be sure if they actually had his sister. Her records were on file it could have easily been a hologram. He just couldn't become a murderer, his sister would hate him if he did. None of that mattered at the moment so he kept his head down and did his job. When the call was over the Captain turned to him. "Order the Vanguard and the Kronos to accelerate to warp 9 and make best speed to the planet," Eva ordered Ensign O'Connor. "Aye, Aye Captain." Michael said, his fingers moving to open the fleet com lines. "USS Paladin, to the USS Vanguard and USS Kronos, prepare to receive amended orders," Michael said, using the key words that would trigger the com system to route the call to the right places. Once he received the go ahead from the two ships he continued. "You are both to accelerate to Warp 9, and proceed to Beta Aquari III at best speed. Your orders are to assist the planets government in maintaining order and peace until the rest of the taskforce can arrive. I am forwarding you all new and relevant information, captain's eyes only, to be distributed as the Captain sees fit. Orders are to be carried out immediately." Michael said, then signaled the end of the message. He quickly received acknowledgement signals from the two ships, and within a minute the two streaked off ahead of the flotilla. Michael watched his sensors for a moment, then turned around to face the Captain. "Captain, the Vanguard and the Kronos have left formation and are en-route to Beta Aquari III, making best speed. O'Shea=/\= Rick looked up from the computer with a sigh and tapped his badge. "Go ahead, Captain." =/\= Lieutenant, we have just received word that conditions on Beta Aquari are deteriorating quickly. Their main researcher and senior doctor was killed in a seemingly freak accident, plus the number of deaths is increasing. We will be accelerating to reach the planet as soon as possible. Make sure your medical teams are ready for deployment the second we reach orbit.=/\= Rick frowned. The news that the senior doctor on the colony had died was bad. Very bad. And he hadn't died from the sickness but a freak accident. That seemed almost to coincidental to be true. The rest of the news didn't exactly make Rick's heart sing either. He sighed. "Our teams will be ready, Captain. Can you give me an ETA?" (reply Straton) "Captain, forgive my asking but are we sure the death of the senior doctor there was accidental?" he asked. "I knew Dr Haegele some years ago, and he was extremely meticulous about safety precautions. It seems a little suspicious that he should die - and in a 'freak' accident too - just before we arrive at the planet and could benefit from what he had to tell us, don't you think? Do you know if his research into the outbreak survived? And who's in charge now?" (reply Straton) "Thank you, Captain. We'll just have to do our best. O'Shea out." He closed the link then looked at Jared, Nissa and K'Palla. "Well, it looks as though zero hour is almost upon us," he said. "I take it you all heard what the Captain had to say?" (reply Keller, Whetari, K'Palla) "We urgently need samples of the virus to work on. I had been hoping that Dr Haegele would be able to assist us, sharing his experiences and research, but that isn't possible now. So we need someone to review his work, and others to gather the freshest data possible. We'll also have to find out who's in charge down there now, and either assist or even, depending on who it is and their capability, take over. This isn't the time to worry about stepping on toes or being nice. That only wastes time and wasting time costs lives." (reply any iyw) Rick spun his chair around then pulled himself to a halt in front of his desk. "Dr Keller... Jared, you know the medical staff here and outside of the three of you, I don't know anyone. Who would be the best people to take down to the colony with us, bearing in mind that of course we don't want to leave the Paladin's medical unit untenanted? We can't assume that no matter how many precautions we take, the infection will not spread here." (reply Keller) "Nissa, I want you to head up one team and talk to the people at the hospital. Find out what you can, and observe patients as much as you can too. We'll need details of how it affects different races, or even if there aren't any. In fact anything that might give us a clue to the progression and just why it's spreading and mutating so fast." (reply Whetari) "K'Palla, I'll need you with me to look at the research that's been done. No offence, to either of you others but we have to spread our resources. Kerge to investigate the 'accident' personally, Lieutenant," Eva replied, an edge creeping into her voice. "The suspicious nature of the timing of this 'accident' did not slip my notice. Lt. Kerge, I am sure, would be pleased if you could give him any information that might help him in his investigation. The comm-link was cut before any information regarding the current state of the research or who might be in charge now could be ascertained, so I am afraid I can not answer your last two questions." =/\=Thank you, Captain. (Reply Engineering) "Captain, I can make my way to shuttle bay one to ready the shuttles and their cargo?" Commander Capps asked, from her right. "See to it," Eva replied with a nod. Captain Straton ordered. Max shifted his weight quickly, and then pushed a few buttons on his console. "Warp 8 aye." He said, but the Captain had already continued to give more commands to engineering. Warp 8 was fast, but it was known to everyone that 8 wasn't fast enough. Warp 9 was the ships maximum, but it had an auto shutdown to it. The third warp core wasn't too much help. With all three cores online it wouldn't make the ship go faster. But Max had an idea. It seemed simple, but he couldn't just pass his idea up. "Captain I have an idea that could work to allow us to achieve warp 9." (reply Straton) Max then tapped his combadge. "Lt Max to Engineering." He called so that he could run his idea to both parties at the same time. (reply Engineering, Matrix) "If we move to half power usage on the ship we could get to warp 9 on one core. When that core goes out in approx. 30 minutes, we could start up the third core and use it for another 30 minutes for a total of 1 hour at warp 9." Max took a hard gulp. He wasn't for sure how responses would come back to his suggestion. Max then heard Ensign Tristen voice. =/\=If we did that then it would mean we would be running only on one core once we reach the planet. We would have to use nearly minimal power for an hour before we could get a second core back up.=/\= Tristen said giving some more information out. He took his station, thinking what would be appropriate to do to help. He then turned around, and said, "Captain, I volunteer to serve as liason between the ship, the government, and the people of Beta Aquari III. "Well, it looks as though zero hour is almost upon us," Dr. O'Shea said. "I take it you all heard what the Captain had to say?" Nissa nodded seriously, her arms folded under her chest. (reply Keller, K'Palla) "We urgently need samples of the virus to work on. This isn't the time to worry about stepping on toes or being nice. That only wastes time and wasting time costs lives." Dr. O'Shea explained. While she didn't completely agree with Dr. O'Shea's interpretation of the wastefulness of being nice, Nissa did know that they had little time for territorial infighting. Feeling that Dr. Haegele's death was frighteningly coincidental, she offered to review his work as she did her own assignments. Wheeling himself to his desk in a mildly amusing manner, Dr. O'Shea handed out assignments. After speaking with Dr. Keller, O'Shea turned his attention to Nissa. "Nissa, I want you to head up one team and talk to the people at the hospital. Find out what you can, and observe patients as much as you can too. We'll need details of how it affects different races, or even if there aren't any. In fact anything that might give us a clue to the progression and just why it's spreading and mutating so fast." He was well rested, and ready to spear through the first day at Aquris III. Besides the normal routines that was mandated on a star ship, the crew was working diligently on the mission ahead. The Captain and the FO had both received many updated reports from all department heads, and to Lt Cmdr Capps most if not all prep rations were thought of. All job duties seemed to have been delegated for the arrival at Aquris III. Medical got hit the hardest, but marines and Security came into a close second. Calvin sat at the chair to the left of the Captain. he had his smaller panel swiveled just below his chest. His fingers ran at a normal to slow rate. Ensign O'Conners voice then filled the bridge. Calvin pushed the panel back into its resting place. The Captain and the Governor talked about the deteriorating situation at Aquris III. The FO listened closely to the two. After the view screen went blank Captain Straton gave orders to different department hands. It was apparent that tasks needed to be put into action the instant they made orbit. "Captain, I can make my way to shuttle bay one to ready the shuttles and their cargo?" (reply Engineering, Matrix) "If we move to half power usage on the ship we could get to warp 9 on one core. When that core goes out in approx. 30 minutes, we could start up the third core and use it for another 30 minutes for a total of 1 hour at warp 9." =/\=If we did that then it would mean we would be running only on one core once we reach the planet. We would have to use nearly minimal power for an hour before we could get a second core back up.=/\= Tristen said from Engineering. Eva silently considered the idea, rubbing her chin slightly. Burning out two of the Paladin's three warp cores would make the ship a giant sitting duck if enemy forces suddenly arrived. One of the warp cores was dedicated to powering the Paladin's offensive and defensive systems, with another dedicated to the engines and the third was normally kept in standby till needed. With only one functioning warp core the Paladin would either be a sitting duck, or defenseless with no shields or weapons. On the other hand, it would allow them to arrive at the planet far sooner than otherwise possible, possibly saving lives. It was not an easy decision to make, but in the end Eva decided to try and save lives. "Do it," She said, with a nod. She looked over at O'Connor as the ship began to accelerate once more. "I want all three fighter squadrons in formation around the ship when we arrive. They will have to serve as our screen if enemy forces arrive. Also inform Commander Rulestaad in StratOps of the situation so she can have the battle group prepared." (Reply O'Connor) "Captain," Lt. Brownlee said suddenly from the science station. "I volunteer to serve as liaison between the ship, the government, and the people of Beta Aquari III. Permission to go down to Nova Roma City as soon as we are in orbit?" "Denied," Eva said after only a moments thought. "Don't worry, sir, I will take all the necessary precautions. Hazard suit, the whole nine yards," Brownlee said before Eva could elaborate "I need you here on the ship," Eva said, shaking her head. "Your skills are going to be needed here, if enemy forces decide to show up. Commander Capps will be leading the away mission on the planets surface. I will need you here both for your skills as a science officer and as Second Officer. I may be called into Strategic Operations, meaning I'll need an experience command level officer to run the ship while Commander Capps is planet side, that's you. Permission to go to the planet denied." "My apologies, Doctor. There were so many new faces at the briefing that I just assumed you had been there, as CMO of the ship." He scratched his head. "Reports indicate that it began amongst livestock. There's no clear identification of where the base infection began, but indications are that it made the leap to humanoids from porcine creatures on smallholdings. As you all no doubt know, there are a lot of similarities between humans and pigs. For the virus to make that leap would be a small one. There are many catalogued cases of similar happenings with other animals too - anthrax for one, HN05 for another." "I would rule out Anthrax," Jared said musingly. "It's a bacterial form that takes the form of spores and lies dormant in the soil until ingested though I see the connection you're making." Rick sighed. "The problem is that the virus seems to mutate too quickly. The doctors on the colony did try to formulate an anit-viral serum but for one reason or another were unable to create one that worked in all cases. Or even in many cases. Whether that's due to either poor facilities or lack of knowledge, I have no idea, although I suspect it may be a combination of both. That is why we have been given the job. Things are spiralling out of control on that colony and our time is running out ever more quickly. Dr Keller, Dr Whetari, since you both missed the briefing, I'll summarise what I said there. It began in the way these things do, with a few isolated cases. But once it made the leap to humanoids proper, as opposed to a few contracting the illness through bad hygiene habits, it appeared to become more virulent as it spread. One major settlement was nearly wiped out, and it has now spread to several other settlements. It is only a matter of time until the whole colony is affected. The bad news is that within 48 hours, those infected become so debilitated that they virtually waste away and die. The really bad news is that the five latest cases that we know of have become fatal within 24 hours." He looked at the others soberly. "If we can't find a cure, and quickly, then the whole colony will have to be quarantined. Effectively, left to die. And that goes against the grain with me. I do so hate to lose. So we can formulate theories now, but until we reach the colony tomorrow they will remain just that, theories. Our best hope is to watch the course of the disease from infection to death. And gruesome as it may sound, more than once." Jared nodded. "We'll need to transport someone up from the colony that's infected directly to a contained room in sickbay, better yet we can use the biohazard decontamination chambers on the ship, they're completely isolated from the main life support and have an airlock to get in and out. We can study the patient or patients there." (Reply: Any) "From here it looks like we wait and get in contact with the physician in charge planetside...." Jared was interrupted by a call from the Captain to Dr. O'Shea, the high points were VERY bad. "Captain, forgive my asking but are we sure the death of the senior doctor there was accidental?" he asked. "I knew Dr Haegele some years ago, and he was extremely meticulous about safety precautions. His teeth showed whitely as he forced a smile. "By the way I couldn't help but notice you got my name right that time, you don't know how good that makes me feel." Then he winked before turning away as he mumbled under his breath. We have all the Type 6 shuttles filled. The Amigo holds the medical supplies that cannot be transported.” Lt Cmdr Capps nodded his head. “We are getting close, start firing up the engines for those shuttles. I want Ensign Brownlee to pilot the Amigo.” They both continued to walk further into the shuttle bay. There were about a dozen crewmen and officers working at a higher pace speed. Some had anti-gravity units carrying containers onto the shuttles. Others were beginning their pre-launch procedures. Calvin looked back to the crewman. He began to think about what was said earlier about the riots, it was going to be dangerous if the riots broke out against the shuttle crafts. “I want one Danube class ship with every 3 shuttles that goes down. The Dreadnought will take the lead position.” “Aye sir,” the crew man said typing a few commands on to the PADD he held. “We will began the pre-launch procedures with them as well.” To the crewman it seemed the command staff wanted all available help so he thought he would suggest it. “Sir, do you want the Type 9 shuttles to be on standby?” “Yes. They will be our back-up if anything should go wrong. Began loading them with the same materials.” Calvin ordered. “Back up sir? What is going on there?” The crewman asked hesitantly. ”We will need to be ready for anything.” The crewman then began to walk away to continue his work, and to start the new orders from Calvin. Kerge took a moment to glance around the bay at those working hard to fulfil the deadlines that had been set them & as he did so, he thought back to an earlier time when he had been serving on the Bird of Prey Tork'Ah. Their situation then had not been entirely disimilar to that he was experiencing now, warriors arming & preparing for upcoming conflict but the conflict then was not with unnarmed & panicked planetary citizens, then it had been Gem'Hadar foot soldiers. Kerge shook his head at the sudden sensation that resurfaced in the side of his head, a reminder of the consequences of not assessing the number of foe realistically enough, but a glorious battle it had turned out to be nonetheless. Walking towards the FO however, the Security chief made his presence known with a gruff 'ahem' as he approached him, at which point Commander Capps turned about in a slightly startled manner. (Reply Capps) "You look troubled sir", said Kerge, "Anything I should be aware of?", he added. He saw a huge Klingon which Calvin recognized immediately. It was the Chief of Security and Tactical. “Yes, Mr. Kerge?” “You look troubled sir,” said Kerge, “anything I should be aware of,” he asked. “Ever since we made contact with the government of Beta Aquari III things haven’t been making much sense,” Calvin told Kerge exactly what was on his mind. (reply Kerge) “Their communication network goes offline with no warning, and so far their engineers can’t figure out the problem. Now, an accident of the senior doctor,” continued the FO not noticing he wasn’t making complete sentences. (reply Kerge) “It is a gut feeling. I have no proof, but it just feels wrong. I would like a security escort with each shuttle delivery.” said Calvin, but was looking for Kerge’s opinion too. Kerge nodded thoughtfully, his eyes narrowing slightly in responce as he did so. "Umm, I tend to agree", said Kerge, "nothing about these latest developments seems right at all sir", he added. "Their communication network goes offline with no warning, and so far their engineers can’t figure out the problem", said the FO thinking back intently over what had transpired earlier, "Now, an accident of the senior doctor", he added. "I know of this", said Kerge nodding apropriately, "The Captain has ordered me to take charge of that particular investigation personally", he added. "If there is any foul play involved, believe me...the instigators will not wish to meet me face to face once their crimes are out in the open", said Kerge, his fists clenching at the very thought of any possible subterfuge. The Klingon allowed that anger to simply bubble just for a while within him as it took hold a little, it felt good to feel it`s grip inside of him, like a tightening knot urging his blood to pump faster in readiness for possible combat. This was a feeling lost on most humans of course, one had to have a Klingon heart to appreciate such things but all said & done now was not the time, Kerge allowed it to finally subside as he let it all go before turning to the FO once more. He took a deep breath & then relaxed.... "So apart from what we already know sir, what else causes this troubled feeling that you experience?", said Kerge. "It is a gut feeling", said Capps, "I have no proof, but it just feels wrong. I would like a security escort with each shuttle delivery.", he added. Kerge nodded again at the FO`s words. "Agreed, a wise precaution, I will see that it is done sir", said Kerge, "my teams are spread thin but I see no reason why a security escort cannot be engaged as requested", he added. (Reply Capps IYW) "The escorts will be available when needed sir", said Kerge as he turned about & headed off into the coriddor once again. Some had servers that took orders, but maybe this Ten Forward was more of the self-service sort. One of her Academy mates mentioned that her first year, she remembered. To break the mildly awkward silence and learn more about her fellow officer, Nissa decided to start a conversation. ~Hopefully I won't sound too feeble,~ she thought. "How long have you been serving on the Paladin, if you don't mind me making conversation?" He knew what the chip was, Fleet Ops wouldn't be sending him anything and not let Knightly in on it. He collapsed into his chair and turned towards his terminal, the black screen staring back at him as he turned the chip in his fingers. Finally after a few moments of indecision, he sat up straighter and pulled his chair in close to the deck. "Computer, Secure my office and isolate my primary Terminal from the Main Computer." Once the computer complied, Michael slid the chip into the terminal, and gave his authorization and clearance codes, and accessed the file on the chip. He forced himself to watch the entire video clip, something he truly didn't want to do. The video was simply 're-enforcement' of the message he got the previous night. This time his sister had a nasty looking phaser burn on her leg, something they made a point of showing him. Like last time the chip immediately erased itself, Michael pulled it from the reader and tossed it in the drawer of his desk, not that it would do him any good. He spent the next 10 minutes trying to rationalize letting the virus loose and he couldn't ever make it work in his head. He still had no proof that she was actually being held, and on top of that, he just could murder thousands of people, his sister wouldn't forgive him. Even after all that thought, he still couldn't imagine what it was going to be like to be responsible for his sister's death, even if they would likely kill her anyway. He held back the tears as he walked to the replicator and ordered a shot of espresso, and pounded it back in an effort to restore his flagged energy reserves. He had been detached from his Squad to attend to 'special' duties, and he wasn't the only one. Most of the Marines on the Paladin with Ambassadorial Guard training, or similar training, had been pulled to work as body guards for the key personnel, as well as guarding specific building and the main camp. Everyone who had passed through the 4th Division had unique training that involved guarding personnel and buildings from indigenous personal, crowd control, and some degree of counter terror training. That is how Rellam found himself standing behind Dr. Keller and his group in the main entry hall of the Main Government Building. He barely listened as Commander Capps dealt with the Governor, before the pair moved off, flanked by two officers that were part of the Commander's detail. Rellam looked around, and watched his sensors. Telemetry and Company wide chatter on one of his back up com channels confirmed that the Marines from the Paladin and the MEF were landing and beaming down, taking up positions across the colony world. Rellam also watched his vicinity scanners, tagging his primary and secondary responsibility, noticing that the other Marines in the detail were doing the same thing. Unlike the medical staff, we where forced to wear environmental protection suits to avoid contamination, Rellam was fortunate enough to be able to wear his full EVO/C equipped BDU, which due to years of training was as good as a second skin. The armor was colored fatigue green, at the moment, but could be changed to the mottled grey and blue urban cameo scheme if he needed it too. He looked massive in the armor, the boots and helmet combined to add a good 6 inches to his height putting him well past the 6 foot mark. As the group of five split up, Dr. O'Shea and Ensign K'Palla moving off to the labs and Dr. Keller, Ensign Whetari, and Nurse Florence headed for the Hospital with a new escort, Rellam nodded to his fellow Marines as he followed the Hospital team, another two Marines moving off to the side to cover the flanks. As they didn't know where they were going, and were being lead, it wasn't quite possible to cover the front either, so the rest of the team would have to be very careful. In quick measure, they were moved to a transit hub for the Government center and boarded a car bound to the Hospital. Moving swiftly, they all boarded and soon moved out. =/=T'kar, sweep the car for any stray frequencies, and then patch into the local frequencies and keep an ear out for and relevant chatter directed at or about The Hospital or StarFleet Doctors or Researchers,=\= Rellam instructed the Details radioman. T'Kar had served a three year stint in the Ambassadorial guard then moved on to more technical fields, and as such as a good man to keep track of the local chatter. Rallem sat by the door, the other members of the detail taking up perimeter positions, just in case anyone tried to blow the car or shoot through the windows. Their armored forms serving a duel purpose as a shield between the Doctors and the outside world, and as a deterrent to anyone thinking of messing with the Star Fleet Marines. "A rather dreary place for a meet and greet, I hope the rest of the colony is in better shape, I'd heard Beta Aquiri 3 was a jewel of beauty in this sector." Nissa watched as a rather tired and seemingly depressed man introduced himself to the group as Dr. "Dr….O’Ssshea, was it? It is nice to meet you." "Keller doctor Walsh, doctor Jared Keller. Chief medical officer of the Paladin, it is a pleasure to meet you." After a firm handshake the doctor turned to Nissa. "And you?" Nissa held out her hand in the traditional Terran greeting and responded politely, "Doctor Nissa Whetari, Assistant Chief Medical Officer of the Paladin...I believe that I spoke to you not long ago before we entered orbit." He then stepped back a few steps, and looked at all of them. "I am fairly new to the field, where would you believe the best place to began." "I would suggest we move to the facilities you have set up doctor Walsh," Dr. Keller offered. "I am going to be working directly in the field treating patients so I need to be directed to your hospital, Doctor O'Shea and my assistant Ms. Whetari wish to be taken to the labs so they can begin an in-depth investigation of the virus, access to your records and database would be appreciated. By the way," Dr. Keller said as he pointed to K'Palla. "This is ensign K'Palla, she will be working with our research group and behind me is nurse Florence." Nissa took note that Walsh was rubbing his thumb nervously as Dr. Keller spoke. ~Hmmmmm...well, he is under a good deal of stress.~ She thought as he responded. "Ah yes, yes. It is a nice to meet you all. I..I really didn't expect so many of you to come at once to be honest." Walsh's voice trailed into a mumble as he finished. "I understand you would like to accompany them to the labs so if you would detail someone to take me to the hospital I would be grateful, making a detour for me would only be an unnecessary waste of time, Doctor O'Shea or Ms. Whetari can notify me if they find anything of significance." Dr. Keller explained, though Nissa had believed she was supposed to watch the progression of the disease in patients, she felt a bit relieved at not having to gather data by watching people die. ~Don't be such a coward - you're just using his mistake to hide in the lab,~ she chastised herself, assuming that Dr. O'Shea would have no problem pointing this mistake and Nissa's acceptance of it as soon as he could. Before she knew it, Dr. Keller and Walsh had hammered out the remaining details and Dr. O'Shea was walking one way, with Dr. Keller heading in the other direction. ~Agh...~ Nissa said looking from one to the other and then catching a glimpse of Dr. O'Shea. (Reply O'Shea iyw) Turning quickly, Nissa scampered down the path walked by Dr. Keller until she caught up with the group. "Ms. Whetari I was under the impression you were going to the labs." A rather confused-sounding Dr. Keller said "Dr. O'Shea actually assigned me to observe the infected in order to gather data. Once I've done that, I'll most likely join Dr. O'Shea in the lab." Nissa explained. "What? Oh! That happens sometimes and I have been very distracted, I apologize." He slowed so that Nissa could finish catching up. "I've been worrying over this problem and quite lost track of who goes to where." "Understandable." Nissa said, nodding. "I'm glad you'll be accompanying me to the hospital, that takes care of the research end there while nurse Florence and I get the medical facilities focused." After a firm handshake the doctor turned to Nissa. “And you?” (reply Nissa) He then stepped back a few steps, and looked at all of them. “I am fairly new to the field, where would you believe the best place to began.” "I would suggest we move to the facilities you have set up doctor Walsh," Jared volunteered as doctor O'Shea seemed a bit preoccupied. "I am going to be working directly in the field treating patients so I need to be directed to your hospital, doctor O'Shea and my assistant Ms. Whetari wish to be taken to the labs so they can begin an in-depth investigation of the virus, access to your records and database would be appreciated. By the way," He pointed to the Klingon science officer standing by. "This is ensign K'Palla, she will be working with our research group and behind me is nurse Florence." (Reply: Levi) "I understand you would like to accompany them to the labs so if you would detail someone to take me to the hospital I would be grateful, making a detour for me would only be an unnessary waste of time, doctor O'Shea or Ms. Whetari can notify me if they find anything of significance." (Reply: Levi) Jared nodded and he and the nurse waited as Levi called for a suitable escort then walked with them as far as the doors where a guide waited then broke off from the group to follow him, the sooner he could start treating the patients the faster he could begin feeding them details as well as vice-versa. Levi listened to the CMO of the Paladin intently as he rubbed his right thumb with his left one. "Ah yes, yes. It is a nice to meet you all. I..I really didn't expect so many of you to come at once to be honest." Levi began to grumble on the more he talked. "An escort will not be a problem for you Dr. Keller. It is a short 10 minute shuttle ride to the hospital. I am afraid that you will find alot of the planet's transporters are not functioning right now," Mr. Walsh said shaking his head. "I haven't have the clearance for giving you permission to search the records and database. I can contact Governor Simmons if you wish?" Levi asked. (reply Keller) Levi continued, "I will escort the rest of your team, and will attempt to help in any way I can in the research labs." "I understand you would like to accompany them to the labs so if you would detail someone to take me to the hospital I would be grateful, making a detour for me would only be an unnecessary waste of time, doctor O'Shea or Ms. Whetari can notify me if they find anything of significance." "Very well." Levi twisted his head to his right. He raised his hand and motioned for some one to come. "Please escort the starfleet officers to the hospital." As soon as they were gone Levi turned his attention to Dr. O'Shea. "The labs are near hear please follow me." I suggest you do so before you get to the labs." Jared said. "Dr. O'Shea is not known for his patience and he will want to get to work as soon as he arrives, if not I'm afraid he'll give the Governor an earful." After the assistant had ordered an escort for himself and his team Jared followed the man toward the shuttle hub, turning around to talk to nurse Florence he couldn't help but notice that Nissa was following, had she gotten confused? "Ms. Whetari I was under the impression you were going to the labs." He said with some confusion. (Reply: Nissa) "What? Oh! That happens sometimes and I have been very distracted, I apologize." He slowed so that she could catch up. "I've been worrying over this problem and quite lost track of who goes to where." (Reply: Nissa) "I'm glad you'll be accompanying me to the hospital, that takes care of the research end there while nurse Florence and I get the medical facilities focused." They had entered a well lighted small building that turned out to contain a number of shuttles running on an electromagnetic drive, a track for the conveyences ran from the building toward the city. After opening the door the driver stepped aside so that they could board. They were the true experts as doctors, while she was just a scientist. The newly appointed head of the Beta Aquari medical division introduced himself, and was obviously worn down and tired. She would be too, the Klingon thought to herself. Watching all these people die less than honorable deaths would be taxing on anyone. Dr Keller gave introductions all around. "By the way," He pointed to the Klingon science officer standing by. "This is ensign K'Palla, she will be working with our research group and behind me is nurse Florence." K'Palla nodded to Dr Walsh. "An honor, sir." she said earnestly. More conversation followed. "I understand you would like to accompany them to the labs so if you would detail someone to take me to the hospital I would be grateful, making a detour for me would only be an unnecessary waste of time, Doctor O'Shea or Ms. Whetari can notify me if they find anything of significance." said Keller. "Very well." Levi twisted his head to his right. He raised his hand and motioned for some one to come. "Please escort the starfleet officers to the hospital." As soon as they were gone Levi turned his attention to Dr. O'Shea. "The labs are near hear please follow me." As K'Palla saw Nissa leave for the hospital, she spoke to her briefly. "I will see you in Ten-Forward later, Nissa. I think we will both need a drink after this is over!" she grinned slightly. "Sir, at this stage of the virus, can you tell us approximately how long it takes for the patient to expire once they are infected?" she began. (reply Walsh) "And how long did it take when the plague began?" she asked. (reply Walsh) "I am curious about the time that it takes for the virus to mutate. If we can calculate how long it takes, we might be able to actually watch it occur, then formulate a way to stop it through what we observe!" she suggested. (jg) Jared Keller - 1615) "Anything I can do to help." Nissa said quietly as they boarded the shuttle. The conveyance being for the function of the colonial government wasn't large and seated a dozen people including the driver; the touches of influence were everywhere also, marking this as the property of the authorities. The seats were plush and covered in leather that was a sandy hue and were two to a side and three deep, on each side of the narrow center aisle was a pair if them. Jared sank thankfully into the nearest one directly behind the driver and motioned Nissa over beside him, as she sat down he continued the conversation they had been having. Nurse Florence took the nearest front row seat on the other side. "Since you'll be at the hospital as well I'll feed my data directly to you Nissa, you can then direct it to our lovable mission CMO as you see fit. " He looked at the back of the drivers head as he activated the vehicle and moved into position to leave the building. He frowned for an instant before looking back at her. "I'll keep you up to date on the condition of the patients as well, should one be about to pass on from the disease I'll notify you immediately." He could sense she wasn't looking forward to this and understood totally, he'd had his days like that when he was younger. (Reply: Nissa) The door to the outside opened allowing sunshine to spill into the garage, the shuttle accelerated smoothly and with almost no sensation of movement to the outside, whooshing past several buildings that made up the compound and within a minute they were leaving them behind and still accelerating toward the city. "Nice view." he murmured at the alien vista of mesas and rocky gorges that made up this part of the planet. "Seems like they could have put things in a more accessible place but then again a colony puts a premium on agriculture and horticulture until it has built itself up into a self-sustaining entity, I suppose they would have steered clear of building on fertile farmland." (REply: Nissa) "Doctor." He glanced away from the view to look at Tyla Florence. "Yes nurse." "How bad do you think it's going to be? In the hospital I mean, how many do you think?" She trailed off and he shook his head sadly. "I don't know, I really don't. I'm expecting numbers in the thousands which the hospital should be able to hold... for now. If we don't make progress soon though we won't be able to hold all of the patients. First thing we are going to have to do is make sure every available bed is used, I'll issue directives on that once we get settled in." The atrium served much of the purpose of an antiquated "town square" as they were known with the added bonus of the beauty and rich bouquet of trees, shubs and flowering plants. In the future technology and artistry could easily be closely intertwined for those who could appreciate a planets richness. Jon was walking down one such "corridor" bounded by a series of lushly groomed and blooming Aquari Spice Roses with their earthy, intoxicating scents wedded to the hundreds of blooms burgeoning out from the plants which were eight feet tall and bushed out to about four feet wide all around. The man was not intent on "smelling the roses" today as he was sometimes wont but walked quickly to his rendezvous, rounding a corner he could see into a herbalists shop ahead and to his right. ~Perfect place for one,~ He thought with a quick grin while to his left were three more shops and a tea room called the Alsatian Peaks, it was the tearoom he made for. There was no door but a partition set just inside the entry directed one to the left or right around it and gave the inhabitants some privacy, taking a loop around to the left he saw eight tables of which five were full, two had a single person sitting at them and the second was the young woman he was looking for, she caught sight of him and smiled as he neared the table. As he took a seat across from her she leaned forward intently. "I'd recommend the duck fois gras along with cider dumplings and Primrose tea, I hear it's their speciality and I heartily agree." He grinned and picked up a white napkin, laying it neatly across his lap then picked up the glass of cold iced water and took a long drink before motioning to the waiter who was homing in on their table. "Yes sir." "I'll have what the lady is having and bring me a double shot of Bourbon whiskey, Crown only even if you have to send out for it." "Yes sir," The man cracked a smile. "Not to worry we have a good stock of liquors." "Good, good." Jon said as the man whisked off. "Celebrating something?" She asked with a grin. "Yes I am," he said and looked around to make sure no one appeared too interested in their conversation, from his seat he could see the entry clearly and would spot anyone perculiar coming through. Leaning toward her he smiled. "I got some good news today, would you care to elaborate on it?" She nodded and lowered her voice. "I showed up unexpectedly at the good doctors house last night and made sure he was up late exercising if you know what I mean?" His eyes narrowed as he took in her supple, curvacous form, long, curled hair and sensuous face. "I can only imagine..." A dreamy grin lit his face for an instant but he snapped out of it quickly. "Anyway don't stop there and I don't need a rundown of the gymnastics." She gave a tinkling laugh. "After he answered Morphius' summons I slipped out and placed a floating, anomolous micro virus into the computer of his vehicle, it was set to activate at a certain point along the route to the lab." "Which was?" "A stretch of road that skirts a rocky gorge some 180 feet or so deep. As he neared it the vehicle would careen out of control." "Technology is so handy at times, I heard someone once said the more sophisticated they make it the easier it is to stop up the plumbing I believe." He chuckled as he took another drink of the icewater from the crystal glass. "It was a near thing from what I was told doctor Haegele almost regained control, they found evidence he nearly stopped the vehicle from taking the plunge." She leaned back as the waiter arrived with Jons drinks, setting them down in front of the man with the bourbon in the place of superiority he gave a quick smile before moving back off. "But he didn't and now he's out of the way. What about the serum he was working on?" "I made sure it was 'accidently' corrupted and therefore useless, I also located his files on the serum and related researches and deleted them using a looped alias that will lead any investigators to a large number of civilian researchers around the colony before they could ever trace it back to me, far too late as I would be gone before then." "It sounds like you were very thorough. Brainy as well as beautiful." his eyes lingered on her honey-blonde hair and aquamarine eyes for a moment before he looked away. "Tomorrow is a go also, very soon the population of this planet, those who don't succumb to the virus are going to tear themselves to pieces. I also have another little surprise currently in the works, I'm hoping that operative does as well." Seeing the order being wheeled toward them on a cart the smile returned. "The Admiral ... or should I say President is going to be very pleased at our progress." He whispered to her then turned his attention to their nearing repast (posted by Charles) ======================================================================================================================== (USS Paladin - Deck 16, Main Holodeck - Main Engineering Recreation - ACEO LT JG Steven Matrix - 20:01) ~That was interesting, I may be on to something here.~ Matrix exited the holodeck with PADD in hand and an idea. [Acknowledged] The turbo lift started its journey to deck 2 as Matrix instructed. A few moments passed and the lift doors opened. Matrix exited and proceeded to the emergency engineering room. Matrix entered. As he expected no one was in the area. "Computer, lights, 75 percent, duplicate current ships status and engineering stations to this command station." [Acknowledged. Ships status and engineering systems will be duplicated to emergency engineering in 4 minutes, 13 seconds. Do you want command pathways transferred to this station?] "No computer, just duplicate the status boards, but do not transfer command pathways." [Acknowledged.] Waiting for the the computer to finish his instructions, Matrix sat down at the auxiliary command station scratching his head and looking at a PADD he had with him. He punched in a few commands on the PADD. [Ships status and engineering system duplication completed.] ~Excellent.~ "Computer, I want to simulate the emergency engineering room on holodeck 16, can you save, store and transfer this to Holodeck 16?" [That instruction would exceed the allocated memory by 89 percent. Memory transfer terminated.] "Damn." said Matrix. [Please restate your instruction.] "Computer, disregard last comment. How much core memory remains available for general access?" [Primary, secondary or backup memory systems?] Matrix was frustrated at this point. "Computer, how much primary and secondary core memory is available?' [The primary memory core is currently thirty-seven percent capacity. Primary command systems have priority over all memory requests and require command authorization for override. Secondary core remains 42 percent free at this time.] "Computer, allocate remaining secondary core memory for this simulation, save, store and transfer to Holodeck 16." [Insufficient scheduling parameters. Operations has scheduled use of the secondary core memory at twenty-two hundred hours. Memory storage would terminate in one hour and 52 minutes. Would you like to continue with the transfer for the allocated duration?] "Crap. I need more time...." [Please restate your instruction.] "Computer disregard my last instruction. Return emergency engineering to standby status." ~I need more time and apparently another main memory core Time to get creative.~ Matrix exited Emergency Engineering.
